Before, During, And After Your Kitchen Remodel
You’ve taken all the proper steps towards your dream kitchen remodel. You made up your plan, hired a trusted contractor, and picked out your cabinets and countertops. The first day of the project is approaching fast, and you might feel overwhelmed by the daunting tasks you’ve got ahead of you: clearing, organizing, and storing the contents of your kitchen safely before the work crew arrives and constructions begin. Then there’s trying to survive construction time without a kitchen, not to mention put the entire room back together after the room is finished. Try not to worry! The following are a few simple steps you can take to ensure that you make it through your kitchen remodel to the end.
In The Days Before
Clear the area. You don’t want the remodeling crew to arrive on the morning of the first day of the project and your kitchen be messy and unprepared. You want to be certain that your kitchen is clear for the construction crew to work in safely, and that your belongings won’t be left behind and subjected to damage.
Pack your things. Gather materials like boxes, newspaper to wrap breakables, tape, storage bags and markers. Make sure that your kitchenware and small appliances such as crockpots, rice cookers, and toaster ovens are packed up and out of the way. Keep like items together, so when you’re putting things back later on, you’ll have everything sorted accurately.
Make your everyday items accessible. We’ve all got our favorite kitchen supplies in regular rotation, such as the coffee maker and mugs, cereal bowls, cooking utensils, and more. Do your future self a favor and set those essential things aside where you can easily find them while construction is in progress.
During The Remodel
Pick a room to serve as your temporary kitchen, the best choice being a room with a sink. If you’re still using your fridge or other large appliances, make sure there are outlets that can manage routing electricity to it. It’s best if this room is in a low-traffic part of the house, so it’s never too crowded or too close to the construction area.
Create makeshift countertops and storing space. A simple folding table can serve as a place to prepare and eat meals or hold small appliances like microwaves or toasters. You can even coordinate with your contractor and get ahold of and use your old countertops temporarily once demolition has begun. You can use plastic storage containers with wheels as drawers, rolling them under the table to store them.
Use multi-purpose appliances for meals. Electric kettles can be used to heat water for tea, oatmeal, and even coffee if you own a pour-over or a French press. Pressure cookers and crockpots can be used to cook stews, meats, and one-pot meals.
After The Construction
Get settled back in. The construction crew will do most of the cleaning up once your kitchen remodel is finished, so all you have to do is move your things back into the room and find a new home for each one. But construction crews aren’t always perfect and might leave lingering dust or debris. Clean your new kitchen for the first time and give those countertops a little extra shine.
Enjoy! Your dream kitchen is now a reality, perfect for hosting house parties or intimate dinners with family.
